The best coffee in Clapham
A flat white a top chef calls the best in London, a two-floor cafe across from the tube, coffee by the bandstand and an espresso in an art gallery. Clapham's independents, and when to go.
By Clapham London EditorialThe best coffee in Clapham is the flat white at the Common Espresso Bar on Clapham Park Road, a minute from the tube. Clapham runs on coffee, from the commuters at the station to the buggy brigade on the Common, and the good independents are worth the small detour from the chains on the High Street. Here is where we get ours, and what else to order.
The Common Espresso Bar, 10 Clapham Park Road
A small independent about 100 metres from Clapham Common tube, serving artisan coffee and fresh juices. The endorsement that counts comes from a chef: Nikita Pathakji, the chef behind Maai on Abbeville Road, calls it her favourite coffee spot in Clapham, and its flat white her favourite in London. Order the flat white, obviously, and a fresh juice if you are being good. It is the one to stop at on the way to the Northern line, and the best reason to leave the house ten minutes early.
Brickwood Clapham, opposite Clapham Common tube
The Brickwood chain started here, in a two-floor cafe across the road from the station with a yard out back. Time Out rates the coffee, and the menu leans brunch: a burrito, a grilled sourdough toastie or The Butcher, their full English. It is rough and ready rather than polished, and all the better for it. With two floors and a yard, there is usually somewhere to sit, and on a sunny morning the yard is the place to be.
Pear Tree Cafe, by the bandstand
The best place for a coffee in Clapham is not on a street at all. The Pear Tree Cafe sits on Windmill Drive, right beside the bandstand in the middle of the Common, with plenty of tables outside. The Pear Tree team opened their first cafe in Battersea Park in 2016 and took over the old cafe here in 2021, and it has been the Common's living room ever since. Get a coffee to go and do a lap of the ponds, or take a table and watch the Common go by. The bandstand next door is also where the Friends of Clapham Common meet for their monthly litter pick, if you fancy earning your coffee.
Nue Ground, 30-32 Abbeville Road
On Abbeville Road, Nue Ground is a cafe with a studio upstairs, where classes start from 6.15am, so the crowd at the tables is often fresh from a workout. There is a brunch menu with plenty of plant-based dishes and a focus on local and sustainable suppliers. It is the calm choice, and the right one if you live on the south side of the Common.
Crispin's cafe, Studio Voltaire, Nelsons Row
Off the High Street, the gallery at Studio Voltaire has a cafe run by the Crispin restaurant team in its entrance lobby. It runs from 11am to 6pm, Wednesday to Sunday, with no booking and takeaway available. Order a coffee and a snack from the counter, then take a look at whatever is on in the gallery. It is the most interesting coffee break in Clapham.
Early starts
- The Windmill, Clapham Common South Side. Open from 7am on weekdays and 8am at weekends, with breakfast until 11am. The one for after an early run on the Common.
- Minnow, 21 The Pavement. From 8am on weekdays and 9am at weekends, with a terrace onto the Pavement. A good place for a working breakfast.
- Hannah, 281 Lavender Hill. Opens at 8am on weekdays near the Junction, with brunch on the menu.
Something sweet with it
For an afternoon treat, walk down the Pavement to Nardulli's Gelateria at No 29. Nikita Pathakji calls the gelato world class; her picks are the lemon sorbet and the amarena cherry. Take it over the road and eat it on the Common.
A note on the ones that have gone
Clapham's coffee map changes quickly. The Black Lab, long a favourite on Clapham Common South Side, has closed for good, so do not follow an old list there. Everything above has been checked as trading.
When to go
The cafes by the tube work hardest in the commuter hours, so if you want a table rather than a takeaway, go mid-morning. At the weekend, the Pear Tree Cafe is at its best on a dry day, when the whole Common is out. Crispin's cafe is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan a gallery coffee for later in the week. Whichever you choose, take your cup across the road: the Common is the best seat in Clapham.
