GAIL's Abbeville Road is at 71 Abbeville Road, SW4 9JW, and on weekdays it opens at 6:30am, which makes it one of the earliest coffee stops in Abbeville Village. Weekends start at 7am. It closes at 6pm every day, according to GAIL's own FAQ page.

What it is

This is the Abbeville Road branch of the bakery chain, sitting directly under the Abbeville Road sign on the small high street at the heart of the Village. GAIL's describes the street as a place “where everyone knows everyone”, and the bakery is a natural first stop on the parade.

The menu runs all day: sourdough, pastries and cakes, plus barista speciality coffee and iced drinks. Tripadvisor's listing also mentions sandwiches, hand-prepared salads and breakfast pots, with vegetarian and vegan options. It lists WiFi too, and outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.

Inside, there is an open kitchen, so you can watch the bakers at work through the day. The room is light and airy, with large windows and a wall of greenery. Good for a laptop hour or a slow catch-up, and handy if you have a dog in tow.

What to order

The notes on this branch do not point to a local signature bake, so the honest advice is to look along the counter and pick what is out. What there is useful detail on is the drinks. These are Deliveroo delivery prices, so in-store may be a little lower:

  • Iced matcha latte: £5.10, tagged “Popular” on Deliveroo
  • Cortado: £4.30
  • Iced latte: £4.60
  • Iced mocha: £5.00
  • Cold brew: £4.10
  • Chai latte: £4.60
  • Hot chocolate (48% milk or 70% dark): £4.50
  • Whole-leaf tea: £3.90

Yelp and Tripadvisor both put the branch in the ££ price band. Expect a coffee and a pastry to sit comfortably inside that.

When to go

If you want the earliest start, go on a weekday from 6:30am. Weekend mornings begin at 7am. Other listings show slightly different times: Yelp has 7am to 7pm, and Tripadvisor has a 7:30am Sunday start. GAIL's own hours are the ones to trust, but it is worth a quick look on the day if you are planning around the last hour.

Booking is not something to plan around here. It is a bakery counter, so the simple approach is to turn up. If you need to ask anything, GAIL's lists 020 4546 8100.

The Abbeville Road setting

Abbeville Village sits just south of Clapham Common Southside, centred on Abbeville Road, with a grid of late-Victorian housing around it. Sotheby's describes a family-oriented enclave with a parade of boutique shops, organic grocers, cafés and restaurants. Tripadvisor's listing adds that the road was once a prominent shopping parade, which fits the feel of it today.

Clapham South is about 0.38 miles from the bakery, and First Table's 2026 Clapham guide calls Abbeville Road a good fit for a chilled, village-feel outing with Clapham South a short walk away. The GAIL's brand itself began in Hampstead in 2005, according to Wikipedia, and had 170 UK branches as of March 2025.

For after: The Abbeville

A few doors along at 67 to 69 Abbeville Road, on the corner of Hambalt Road, The Abbeville is the obvious next stop. First Table names it best for a neighbourhood pub in its 2026 Clapham guide. It is run by Three Cheers Pub Co, which describes a cosy, rustic pub with a main bar and a small bar, and street tables at the front in summer.

OpenTable puts the price band at £25 and under. Sunday roast is a draw, and reviewers advise booking for Sundays. You can book through OpenTable or Quandoo. Opening hours differ between listings, so check before you set off.

A sensible plan: coffee and something from the counter at GAIL's on Abbeville Road, a walk along the parade, then a drink at The Abbeville when the day turns.
