Farmers’ markets near Clapham: Venn Street and where else to go
Venn Street Market on Saturdays is the nearest thing to a Clapham farmers’ market, with Balham and Herne Hill within reach.
By Clapham London EditorialShort answer: head to Venn Street in the Old Town on a Saturday, 10am to 3pm. That is the market to know if you are searching for a farmers’ market in Clapham. Balham trades the same morning, and Herne Hill covers Sunday.
The old Sunday market is gone
You may still see a Sunday farmers’ market listed at Bonneville Primary School, off Abbeville Road, SW4. London Farmers’ Markets says on its own page that that market is no longer open. Do not plan a Sunday around it.
Venn Street Market, Clapham Old Town, SW4
When: Saturdays, 10am to 3pm. Where: Venn Street, SW4 0AT, a pedestrianised side street in the Old Town, with the restaurants, bars and cinema close by. Clapham Common station is about 250m away. No booking needed, it is a market.
The market describes itself on its own site as a produce and artisan food market with street food, makers and flowers. Tripadvisor reviewers put it at 30 or more stalls a week. It calls itself an award-winning community market and says it works directly with local organic and biodynamic farms and small artisan producers, so you meet the people who grew the food.
Traders named on the market’s information page:
- Brambletye Fruit Farm: organic and biodynamic apples, eggs and mushrooms.
- Ted’s Veg: vegetables.
- Stevens of Sibsey: cut flowers.
- Olivier’s: French loaves including sourdough, 100% spelt and rye, plus focaccia, croissants and pastries.
- A French Comté cheese and charcuterie stall.
- En Route coffee: a house blend roasted locally by Old Spike.
There is also a Makers Market section, running all year, mostly handcrafted goods. On Tripadvisor, reviewers single out the Moen and Sons pork rolls and Bad Brownie for lunch.
What to look for
Ask which farm the veg or eggs come from. The market says it buys direct from farms, so a good stallholder will have a straight answer. Go for the growers first (veg, eggs, apples, mushrooms), then flowers and bread on the way out.
Balham Farmers’ Market, SW12
When: Saturdays, 9am to 1pm. Where: Henry Cavendish Primary School, Hydethorpe Road, SW12 0JA. London Farmers’ Markets says it is open every week rain or shine. It is the one for a stricter farmers’ market: raw milk and cheese from E.S. Burroughs, biodynamic and organic veg from Brambletye and Wild Country Organics, free-range poultry and beef from Laycroft, meats from Pick’s Organic and seasonal game. It starts an hour earlier than Venn Street and finishes earlier, so go to Balham first if you want both on one Saturday. Check the LFM page for the latest before you set off.
Herne Hill Market, SE24, for Sundays
When: Sundays, 10am to 4pm. Where: Railton Road, SE24 0JN, outside Herne Hill station. It is a general market rather than a strict farmers’ market: a Breakfast London guide describes independent traders, seasonal produce, baked goods and flowers. Think of it as the Sunday follow-up to Venn Street.
Also nearby: Northcote Road
Northcote Road Market in Battersea runs most days and is busiest on Fridays and Saturdays, according to Time Out. It mixes groceries with charcuterie, gifts and artisanal wares, so it is a good market but not a growers’ one.
