Clapham Common toilets, water and bins for a long day out
The toilet block by the tennis courts on the West Side, the fountains, the bins and the rules, sorted before you spread the blanket.
By Clapham London EditorialHead for the toilet block near the tennis courts, off Clapham Common West Side in SW11. It is the one public block the AccessAble guide for the Common lists, and it is the answer to most searches for Clapham Common toilets.
Toilets
The block has female, male and accessible toilets, and the accessible one has a left-hand transfer. It sits about 25 to 28 metres from the West Side access point, and about 15 to 24 metres from the rear access road off Windmill Drive. Two things to know: there is no level access into the toilets, so anyone who needs step-free should bear that in mind, and the guide rates the lighting in the female toilets as low to moderate, so it is a daylight stop. GoParks London also lists an operational toilet for the Common.
Do not confuse it with the two disused buildings in the wooded corner of the west side, nearest Clapham Junction. The old toilet building there closed decades ago and has been offered for lease as a café, so it is not a public toilet.
On big event days, Lambeth’s notice for 2026 Clapham Common events covers temporary structures including toilets, so portable ones may appear on some days.
Off the grass
Tesco at 128 Clapham Common South Side, SW4 9DF, is reportedly listed as a public toilet, open 9am to 5pm daily, according to the toiletnearme.co.uk listing. Ring ahead if you are relying on it.
Drinking water
The landmark is the Temperance Fountain, a large Victorian drinking fountain by August von Kreling, which you see as you step onto the Common from Clapham Common tube station. It was a Victorian push to get people drinking clean free water instead of beer. Treat it as a monument to admire rather than a tap to fill a bottle at.
A Zenodo dataset record also describes a drinking fountain at the far east end of the Common, near the Pavement. Bring a full bottle regardless, and use the Refill London scheme, which encourages cafés and businesses to offer free refills. The London For Cheap refill finder is a quick way to find the nearest one.
Bins
GoParks London and the Greenspace Information for Greater London record both list litter bins and dog litter bins on the Common. The Love Your Common campaign, run by Friends of Clapham Common with Lambeth, asks you to take your litter home, and to use the bins if you cannot. On a hot weekend the sensible move is to pack a spare bag.
Barbecues and food
Lambeth’s park byelaws prohibit cooking and barbecues, and any food preparation or service needs an event permit. So bring a picnic, not a disposable grill. For supplies, Clapham High Street, SW4, is a short walk from the north-east end of the Common.
Gates and getting in
The Common is open land and AccessAble lists it as open 24 hours. Some access points have no gate at all, and at others the gate opens away from you, so you push. Named access points include Clapham Common West Side and the Windmill Drive access road.
Bikes
The Common has cycle paths. Lambeth’s 2026 events notice names the London to Brighton Bike Ride route as running along Southside, Nightingale Lane, Nightingale Walk and the Avenue, so expect those roads to be busy on the day. Bring a lock and plan to leave your bike on the streets around the edge.
